I went to the gym today. I know, pretty impressive, but that’s not it.
As I approached the front door, another gym user was heading in too. He was only a very few steps ahead of me, but he made no effort at all to hold the door for me. It swung back in my face. Well, perhaps he hadn’t noticed me. But more likely he wasn’t the kind of person who gave a fuck. It felt unnecessarily rude to be honest. Amazing how much of a slight the lack of a basic bit of manners is.
I opened the door and he was going through the second door that leads into the gym vestibule. There were maybe four feet between the two doors. He must surely now have sensed someone was behind him and would acknowledge his error/selfishness.
Nope, the same thing happened again.
It would have delayed him by milliseconds to hold the door and it was almost harder to let it go, but on he went.
We then arrived at the entry gates. I had a chance to catch up with him as he was trying to get through the barriers without opening his bag. This guy really hated holding things open. Even for himself.
By now it was impossible to pretend that he didn’t know I was hot on his tail and at the next door he made a cursory effort to hold it open. But before one second had passed he became impatient and let the door go. I was maybe one a half seconds behind him. The door shut in my face.
There were at least three more doors between here and the changing rooms so I actually held back to avoid him failing to be polite. I hoped that there would come a time in the future where he was just behind me and I could fail to keep a door open for long enough for him to come through. But who am I kidding? I would never do that. Even to Piers Morgan. It’s all very well calling someone a fascist-enabling cunt, but there is no need to be rude.
