Wednesday 1st July 2020

July shows up, as meaningless as new months have become. At least 2020 is half done with now. Can we fast forward through the rest?

The book, temporarily, is not hanging over my head like the sword of Damocles, but there was no time to sit back and relax today as I prepped for tonight’s RHLSTP.
Not that the research for this show can really be classified as arduous. I spent an enjoyable day in the company of Daniel Sloss, a comedian I hadn’t seen all that much of before today, but who is one of the UK’s top acts when it comes to touring the world. And though he’s only 29 he’s done ten or eleven live shows already and is covering some interesting territory. His parents, apparently, saw some of my most early attempts at stand up back in the early 90s when Daniel was a baby (and not at the gigs I assume) so it’s terrifying to think that a human who wasn’t even alive when I first did stand up in London now has that kind of CV. Luckily I have still done more shows than him, but I don’t think that record will last for long.
We covered a lot of ground in the podcast which you can view here (or wait til August when it will crop up in your usual feeds), but I especially enjoyed the stuff about Robot Wars and doing gigs in Russia with an interpreter.  Daniel’s show Jigsaw has also broken up over 100,000 couples. It’s available on Netflix along with Dark, which has some great stuff about why it’s important to be able laugh about disability, but also explores humour in grief.

I booked up some guests for upcoming shows too, including Jo Caulfield, Bettany Hughes, Sophie Duker and Bilal Zafar.  Keep an eye here for more news.
I am idly thinking of trying to fulfil my Edinburgh Fringe commitment and do 10 shows in early August in the daytime, but why would I do that to myself? Am I mad? Ah yes, that’s why.

RHLSTP with the fabulous Kiri Pritchard-McLean is now up on audio
