There’s been a lot of driving to do since I got my new car. Today just a couple of hours from Cheddar to Woolacombe, but was very tired and it was a tough journey. I had been told to head to the village we were staying in via a specific road, so had put that address in my sat nav. Once we were on the road I knew we had to turn right and I thought the turn was imminent. We ended up driving up a road that was barely wider than our car. I hoped we wouldn’t meet anyone coming in the other direction. Of course we did. Even though we were a fair way up the thoroughfare the other car didn’t budge and it was clear he expected us to back up. I didn’t think there was any passing place behind me, but I reversed anyway. I am not the best at reversing in a small car, but this was a baptism of fire for this larger vehicle. I couldn’t really see the road behind me and as the verges were all hedges it was very difficult to tell when the road was turning.
There was one slightly wider part, but we were both in big cars and even though the other driver pulled over to one side I was pretty certain that my vehicle couldn’t fit through.
It was a stressful few minutes of jolting backwards, hitting verges, adjusting forwards, before finally emerging out on to the main road. I thought I might have bumped the paintwork. But I was cross with the other driver. I was pretty sure he must have been nearer to a convenient passing place than I had been. We gave each other shitty looks.
I was more annoyed though because I had realised during all of this that I couldn’t possibly be in the right place and had taken the wrong turning anyway.
Finally we found the right place and I parked up and the car just had a few grass stains on it, so no harm done. But the stress involved in this exercise was exhausting. And I was already exhausted.
It was hard to tell if we’d chosen a good spot. A heavy mist hung over the town and it was raining a bit. I didn’t really care though. We’ve come here to relax as much as possible. Admittedly getting here has made me much more tired than I was, but we have a week to get over the journey, before having to go through it all again.
We went to the pub and then had some very good fish and chips, but once Phoebe was in bed at 7 I knew that I wasn’t going to last much longer. I was in bed before 8pm. Because that’s the kind of rock and roll lifestyle I now lead. You can keep your rock and roll lifestyle. Being in bed at 8pm makes you the king of the world.
