I can't quite believe it. I came down this morning to find a letter on my doormat. It was vaguely familiar to me. I picked it up and saw that it came from the Welsh traffic enforcement people. Surely not. Surely I hadn't got another speeding ticket. I have been driving so carefully, especially when I am in Wales, as the six points I have already have all come from there, the last three
coming from the first DVD record in January.
But sure enough I opened up the letter and I had again been caught, this time in Cardiff doing 50 mph in a 30 zone the morning after the record of menage a un. I do remember I misread my sat nav that morning and got a bit lost and a bit frustrated and I was possibly driving a little fast as I tried to find my way back to the road I needed. But I hadn't noticed any speed camera (obviously) and what are the chances of getting caught again in probably the only time I broke the speed limit in the entire time I was there? I feel like I am being vicitimised by the Welsh. What have I ever done to hurt them?
And are the Welsh authorities this ruthless with everyone? In which case how come anyone in Wales has a driving licence left?
It's a fitting end to a week where I have operated outside the boundaries of the law, though now I find myself with nine points on my licence and a good four months until three of them are wiped off - and then another three years before I can get rid of the six remaining ones. Maybe I should just get it over with and drive like a maniac until I am banned and then at least I can start again from scratch.
Traffic cameras are clearly getting more efficient and catching more and more people and I wonder if more people are getting banned than ever at the moment and also what the repercussions of this might be. Because if everyone gets banned then the government is losing out on parking fines and toll road charges and all the other ways they make money off the driving public. And whilst I have to hold my hands up and admit that I was speeding in all the cases I have been caught, a drive down any motorway will show you at least a third of cars speeding. So it's a bit of a lottery.
Weirdly I don't feel as despondant as last time I was caught, even though I am nearer to a ban. It just makes life more exciting. Doubly so as I am driving to a wedding tomorrow. In Wales. Where the speed cameras have been specially modified to capture me. All my points come from driving in Wales. I think I should only be banned from driving there.
