I watched a bit of the London Marathon on telly this morning. Was it six years since I did this?
Yes it was. It somehow feels a lot longer ago than that. And like it was someone else who actually did it. That was a crazy year. Crazier than the one that I went around with a Hitler moustache most of the time. How long ago was that?
I don't think I will run the Marathon again, though it was pretty good to have something like that to work towards. I miss running out in the open air though and haven't done that enough recently. So I gave it a little go this afternoon (like one of those kids who plays tennis only because Wimbledon is on), but I only managed about half a mile before I started walking. I don't think I am that unfit, just some days the fluidity isn't there. And at least I was giving it a go.
And I had a good walk instead. And then cycled down to the Lyric for this month's comedy gig. After a couple of slightly less well attended ones it was cool to have a lot more people in and also to be performing on the set of "Moby Dick" which is currently playing in the theatre. The comedians entered via a trampoline that was set up beside the deck and I was able to go up and pretend to be steering the ship and checking the horizon.
My opening gambit of "Call me Ishmael" only got a few chuckles from those kind of over laughers who like to show they have got Shakespeare's jokes. But I think I gave a nice mixture of old stuff and ad libbed banter, even daring to see if I could do material about how many carrots I seem to have eaten this week. I was pretty sure I had eaten more than anyone else in the room as I've been snacking on carrots whilst I've been driving, and also eaten most of a vegetable pie that had nine carrots in it and tonight ate a big bag of veg that was in the fridge that was largely carrots, because I am going on holiday tomorrow so was trying to make sure we'd eaten everything before we left.
I have definitely been getting my five a day. I didn't know where it would lead but it did lead to quite a subtle joke about how I could see the people in the darkness at the back of the theatre.
This is a great night and
the last two shows of the season seem certain to sell out so do book now.
In more exciting news I am heading off for a well-earned mini break to Rome for the next four nights. I checked in on line and have my boarding pass already. Isn't the future a wonderful place to be? Let's not get too hubristic but it seems that we have managed to avoid the twin threats of BA strike and volcanic ash and tomorrow I should be sipping a cool Italian beer whilst overlooking the Pantheon. Which after all the hustle and bustle (and hassle and bassle too) is going to be very welcome indeed. See you in Roma. Arrivederci!
