So this is why living in the country is amazing. There’s a shop in our village (actually more of a shed) that has no staff working there, just fruit, vegetables and eggs on display. You go in, choose what you want and then post the money for it (or an IOU if you haven’t got the right change) through the house letterbox. It runs entirely on honesty. Or at least it once did. Nearly everyone respects how awesome this service is, and who wants to steal vegetables from their neighbour? But apparently a few years back one customer did regularly steal these cheap products and was only discovered when they installed CCTV. Imagine the shame. Imagine being the kind of person who doesn’t want to pay a neighbour for such a useful service. I mean I know I might have taken the odd pick n mix sweet in my time, but neither Ian Pick or Ian Mix lives near me, because they both live in massive mansions due to them selling doll mixtures at 10p a piece.
Perhaps the vegetable thief enjoyed the power or the thrill, but oh the shame of what they’d done. They no longer live in the village. I don’t know if they were ostracised for their awful behaviour or they moved to be away from chicken-shit splattered egg-based temptation. But I am glad they are gone. Why wreck something this beautiful?
Need To Know tweeted a retro look back to
their post on this day in 2003, which mentioned that I had started blog and pointed out that
I wondered how the 50 year old me might use it. Whilst it’s slightly terrifying to realise that the distance between my year off and my blog starting and my blog starting and now is approximately the same, it’s also interesting to see how accurate that mission statement was. I don’t know if I thought I’d still be going after 5540 days or have an entry for every day for all that time, but I immediately recognised its potential value. And that 50 year old me came along much more quickly than the 35 year old me anticipated. Now what’s the 65 year old me going to think?
