Being back in Melbourne is both wonderful and disorientating. It is familiar yet strange. Best of all I didnÂ’t feel at all jet lagged after the best sleep IÂ’ve had for months.
It so doesn’t seem a year since I was here, which is such a cliché of getting older, but some places I would pass and think, I was there just the other day surely. Yet on the other hand I would get confused and lost for a while in a city that I lived in for a month, only this time last year.
I managed to locate the street that the supermarket was on and was ambling down it, feeling a bit hot in the somehow unexpected sunshine (though you’d think I would have remembered that it was quite hot here and left my leather jacket in the hotel), when suddenly I saw Dave Gorman (now there are quite a few Dave Gormans in the world as this particular Dave Gorman has gone to great lengths to demonstrate, so I think I should point out that this Dave Gorman is the British comedian, perhaps best known for his show, “Are you Dave Gorman?”)
Initially I was very surprised to see Dave Gorman. Meeting someone I knew in somewhere so far from home seemed an incredible coincidence and I was momentarily shocked (my insides jumped) at the impossibility of seeing someone I knew on the other side of the world.
But then I remembered that Dave Gorman is here because heÂ’s doing a show at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, so there wasnÂ’t really any need to be surprised.
After a pleasant chat with the bearded obsessive comedian (a sentence that applies from both perspectives, I hope) I concluded that maybe I was a little jet-lagged after all.
