My occasional days of being an actor are getting less occasional. And today I was in a secret location filming for a show about an office that manages superheroes (and supervillains). I first did work on this project over nine years ago but this year is the year when old ideas come round again and I am glad that the persistence of the writers and producers has paid off and grateful that they have booked me again, even if I am older and greyer than before. It was a pretty intensive day of filming, with the added complication of it being quite an improvisational piece. When I had arrived I had not felt in the mood to pretend to be someone else and come up with most of my lines, but once we got going it was very enjoyable. I managed to get a nice rapport with the other actors, most of whom I was meeting for the first time today and excitingly got to act alongside an actor from the Hellraiser film. He had played a Chattering Coenobite and I don’t know if he’s had some work done, but he looked a lot different today. I suppose 30 years have passed. He was playing an emissary of Satan today and was very good at it too.
By the end of the long day I was fading a little bit. March has been a crazy month and as this was the only day I could give them this month, they tried to cram nearly all my scenes into one day of filming. But I felt more relaxed and less nervous about my own performance than I have for a while and it was a fun challenge to see what my subconscious would come up with on each take.
But the thing that will probably stop me ever being a great actor is my phobia of the sound of polystyrene. This is used in filming for some reason, I think mainly to freak out people who don’t like the noise, and I have to leave the room or block my ears every time it is moved for fear that it will send me flying into an Incredible Hulk style rage. The time lost to filming over this is just too great. Today they indulged me, but I assume that’s why I have failed at so many auditions.
Anyway, some funny stuff today. Not sure when it’s out or where you’ll be able to see it - the stuff from 9 years ago was really good, but has never been seen. But I will let you know when I know.
