Feeling a lot better after a week of comparative abstinence and a weekend at the Health Spa. I haven't had a drink or any chocolate for a week and am hopeful that I might get back on the healthy course that I maintained throughout 2008, but which seems to have come off the rails a bit this year.
I had a Thalassotherapy session this morning, led by Gary, who looked a bit like an off duty Father Christmas and who clearly fancied himself as a bit of an observational comedian, pointing out how people don't like to talk in lifts and how men and women are different in their willingness to discuss medical conditions. I liked Gary though. He was having a good go and was friendly and put people at their ease, even if his bit about how it's difficult to get automated phone systems to understand what you're saying was a bit hack. "We've all been there," he chuckled, and I thought about saying, "I haven't. On the rare occasions I have had to use those services they have worked quite well." But I didn't. Nor did I say, "Hey mate, I'm a professional comedian, so if you don't do jokes, I won't try and tell you how to operate this massive whirlpool full of salty water. OK?"
Because I am not a cock.
I just thought those things instead.
Because I am a cock.
Just a different kind of a cock.
A dishonest cock.
I felt pretty good by the end of the day though, having eaten healthily (if a little heartily) and done some exercise and walked around in public in a dressing gown.
We've already spent a lot of the weekend watching most of the first season of "The Wire". I don't think anyone else has really noticed it, so let me be the first to say that it is an awesome and involving show. I think it might catch on a bit, but when it does, remember that you heard it here first. The BBC should really be making shows like this, or at least of this quality and scope. I think it might be the only future for the BBC, to be like the UK HBO, providing excellent and modern drama and comedy, rather than shitty reality shows involving dancing celebrities. Well that's the way they should be going. Of course they won't.
