I did a pretty good show tonight, to around about 60 people. Other acts in my venue are getting similarly disappointing numbers and I am beginning to wonder if I made a mistake moving from the Pleasance where there is an ever present floating audience looking for a show to go to. I feel reasonably confident that it will still improve, but may need a couple of positive reviews to get things moving.
As I walked down the road from the venue to get some chips after the show (I am keeping a mainly healthy diet) three people (not together) stopped to say how much they'd enjoyed the shows (and these were people travelling in the opposite direction, so they'd seen it on a previous night). This seemed like a good sign and was a nice pick me up. I'm very happy with the show, I just hope more people come to see it. Yet I also appreciate that there are a lot of shows out there not getting as many punters in as me, so I can't complain too much.
I am managing to stay positive and am having a great time and it's still relatively early days.
I am spending lazy days doing not much at the moment. I went to see a show at the Underbelly this afternoon and afterwards happened to bump into TV's Stewart Lee. He's getting great reviews and seems very happy with it all.
We both first came up here for the first time in 1987 to perform a lunchtime show in a massive room to almost 6 people a day. I don't think we'd have believed we'd still be coming up here in 17 years time - not because we wouldn't have wanted to, just that managing to turn this into a career would have seemed an impossible dream. We've both had our fair share of ups and downs in that time, but I think if you stick around long enough people have to finally start acknowledging you.
I wonder if we'll both still be coming up in 17 years time.
