After months of suffering in nothing like silence with my hurty upper arm, I went to a physio a couple of weeks back (you remember - I can't even do something like that without nearly getting into a fight). I've never been a fan of massages as I didn't see the point of them -unless they ended up getting fruity and the only time that happened was with a middle-aged man who put hot and cold stones on me and then possibly brushed his hand against my secret area (he'd said I didn't need to wear pants for some reason). Careful what you wish for.
But when you're in pain and you go to someone who knows what they're doing and who insists you keep your pants on, it can be an amazing thing. Last time I had a deep tissue massage, that hurt a bit, but in a good way and really made a huge difference to the levels of pain that I was experiencing. Today she noted that things were a lot less tense, but she got right into the hurty bit again and then stuck some needles into me. I think this was part of the treatment, but it might have been a punishment for telling the man in the house to fuck off.
I wasn't sure about having acupuncture and it's something that I've managed to avoid for my 57 years and filed alongside astrology and homeopathy. I was happy to give it a try though. It didn't hurt, but I am not sure I really felt anything either. I tried to describe the sensation in my upper arm, but was unable to do so and the physio said that that was exactly what she was looking for - a feeling that one struggled to describe. So it was working then.
The massage and the ten minutes lying face down on a massage table with pins stuck in me was very relaxing and I left feeling calm and faintly high. I've been exhausted and stressed out and this really made a difference. And my shoulder is a lot better, though I think I am just going to have to wait out the main source of pain.
I was more impressed with how chill it made me. Phoebe was having a sleepover with two friends today and they arrived early, but I enjoyed the chaos.
I don't know if it was the massage or being turned into a pin cushion of just having half an hour to properly relax, but it was definitely as a result of one or more of those things.
