Every time I see the headlines I think that it’s the company Amazon that is on fire and worry about receiving some pens I ordered.. then I read it and remember that it’s just some trees. Phew.
We went to a musical in the morning. We’d been told it was suitable for kids, but I was a bit apprehensive when I spotted that our kids (and the kid of a friend) were the only children in the room. And we were trapped in the back row of a theatre that was in the round and the only escape involved more or less entering the action. My son is not a great sitter at the best of times, but it seemed that we were about to be those annoying parents who’d brought their child to a non-kid show. But they hadn’t stopped us at the door and I’d had to pay for my not even two year old (which is usually only the case when it’s a show aimed specifically at kids). It was a beautiful and enchanting musical - it’s called the Islander, but just as it got to the most beautiful and enchanting and saddest bit our son kicked off (he’d been really good for half an hour and we’d kept the noise bubbling under with crisps and a KitKat for another twenty, but he wasn’t ready for the denouement). Catie managed to duck out with the minimum of distraction. Which was still loads of distraction. And I watched the rest with only two bored four year olds chatting quietly. And occasionally loudly. I’d recommend the show though, but not for anyone under 8.
My daughter came up with a joke later on. “What did the policeman say to his tummy?” she asked.
“You’re under a vest,” I chimed in, seemingly unable to pretend that I didn’t know the punchline, like an idiot.
“No,” said Phoebe, very quickly and I don’t think I’d preempted at all. She gave me the correct punchline "I’m going to be in jail.” Presumably the policeman. Great stuff.
