Monday 5th August 2019

6087/19016

Day off! I’ve never had one this early before, but made the sensible decision to take every Monday off this year and I do not regret it.
The bad news was that my mother-in-law went home this morning, leaving us in 24 hour control of our own kids, which frankly is unacceptable. Will it be harder doing a daily podcast and then looking after the kids or doing a daily podcast and then doing a stand up show? Today, without the podcast, I’d go for the former, but maybe the midday escape will help (Catie was still doing her show, so I had to do bath time and bed time alone as I will until the Drunk Women hang up their Prosecco glasses at the end of the week).
I don’t mind the enforced night in though and did a bit of prep for tomorrow’s podcasts as the kids slept and promised to let my wife sleep off her professional hangover and do the early morning too. Am I a saint? Should I be lauded with awards for my selfishness? Or should it be unremarkable that a father might be expected to do 50% of the child care, even if that occasionally rises to 55%?
It’s slightly weird to be missing out on the greatest arts festival in the world and instead be at home watching youtube videos of some of the comedians’ previous work. But it’s a lot nearer my bed.
It’s going to be a dull month of Warming Up I am afraid. But then I never really wrote about the interesting stuff from the more hedonistic Fringes on here and latterly most of the August blogs were just about the tears shed over poor ticket sales.
I am liking the vicarious thrill of seeing my kids engaging with live entertainment though and seeing their imaginations being fired.
We took the kids to another show, the Monksi Mouse Cabaret. We’ve been to Monksi Mouse’s discos before and they’ve always been reliably entertaining (and we’re booked into one later in the week), but this was a show of songs and spectacle, with a degree of audience participation, but was excellent as well. Ernie loved being a sleeping bunny who woke up when instructed and Phoebe enjoyed watching the lighting effects and seeing the performers dispense with the fourth wall and come down amongst us. She is still totally enamoured with the Dummies though and has been punching me and then kissing her guns, because they did that in their show, so thanks a lot Dummies.
We’re all still a bit sniffly and exhausted from last week and I didn’t envy my wife having to go out to do a gig tonight, though their show is going great and selling out and I know they’re having a blast.
