Today’s home schooling involved boiling a precious egg and then having Phoebe decorate it and then look after it all day without breaking it. She did a great job, til her little brother grabbed it and threw it on the floor whilst I was on the dog walk/stone clear at 8am.
There were tears for eggy. I tried to fix her with a plaster, but that obscured her face and cracked her up more and there were more tears.
The next task (these ones came from Phoebe’s teacher) was to try and think of a way to stop an egg smashing when dropped from six feet. I worked harder than Phoebe on this one and tried to make a little space ship out of an egg box and an astronaut hat out of foam. But in the end the egg was just plonked in the egg box and wrapped in those big air pockets you get in Amazon packages. I thought that was over kill and not in the spirit of things as that was too over cautious. But the egg cracked anyway. And now we had two eggs to mourn.
How we will regret those two lost eggs when our final box has run out later this week.
Then we went back to our science game (this is the one we are using) where we mixed more colours in test tubes, but this time did 24 shades using the three primary colours and then got to put crystals into the water. We went outside to play football and hide and seek and when we came back the water had turned into jelly. And after time they will turn into bigger coloured crystals. Why have I been wasting my life on writing comedy when I could have been doing this all day.
I managed a solid hour of work and made som progress with the introduction to my new book. But we are tired and stressed and though the kids are bringing me immense joy, the outside world that we are shunning is shifting in unknowable and terrifying ways.
What is coming in the next month? Will anything be recognisable when we emerge from our cocoons?
The stone clearing and the snooker remain a reassuring constant for a couple of hundred people. And the Twitch thing seems to be working out for us. Chris Evans (not that one) and me did a little practise remote interview. So we might be up and running going RHLSTPs next week. Check out the channel here.
