My son has started writing a journal - like father like son. He's done about six days in a row now, and he's got a great head start on this blog. Who knows how many days in a row he could manage? I kept a diary from about the age of eight, but for a long time it was just me listing what subjects I'd done at school that day, so you might as well have just checked my timetable and it made for fairly repetitive entries.
Ernie's generally start "I woke up" which is a great way to start a diary entry and although he does mention school subjects he tends to go into more detail. Today he'd told me that the short hand on a clock was called the hour hand and the long one the minute hand. Did you learn that at school? I asked.
No, he replied, I just worked it out myself.
He is also a liar and not a very good one. But it made me laugh. He's proud of his new knowledge though and that went in his journal, so now he'll always know which day he was taught that/worked it out for himself.
He's a lot of fun and asks some great questions still (nothing as good as "Do ghosts have bumholes?"). He gets bitten by midges a bit and asked me, "Do mosquitos sleep?" because he gets bitten in the daytime and the nighttime. I don't know if they do sleep, but suggested that like humans they might work in shifts.
It turns out that they do sleep - and most of the time - so they just chew on you on whatever hour they happen to be awake. You learn so much being a parent.
