During the London run of menage, a couple of the people from
SCOPE came to the show. They were interested to see the Warming Up entry that I included in the programme about my love for
Jenny Agutter in 1976. Jenny apparently does a lot of work for SCOPE and was at a recent event that I had been unable to attend, much to my eternal regret.
But the SCOPE people said that they thought Jenny would love what I had written about her and asked if I would sign a programme for her. Though I was a little unsure about it - the piece isn't entirely complimentary and though it's meant to be tongue-in-cheek in places, Ms Agutter might not appreciate that - I did as they said and thought no more about it.
But this morning I received a letter from the SCOPE people with a copy of my programme that Ms Agutter had signed for me. She wrote, "Dear Richard, No I am not quite like this any longer, and happily I am not wearing those silly green outfits. I am flattered by your "interest" even if it is aimed at a few years ago... All the best, Jenny".
I am filled with excitement and shame by this. The truth is that Jenny is still a very attractive woman, and you know, I would, so I feel rude for joking that I am no longer interested in her. But I think she gets the joke and so it's very exciting to get a message from her. That's the power of Warming Up. The teenage me, poised with my American Werewolf in London video ready to pop into the machine again would not believe it.
