Wednesday 3rd December 2008

Today let us pay tribute to Jake Weber, the actor who plays Joe Dubois in Medium. Some people might think the star of the show is Patricia Arquette who plays psychic Alison Dubois, who helps the police catch criminals, mainly through the medium (that's not why it's called that) of dreams. The dreams are ultimately helpful, but usually it takes 45 minutes for them to make sense. Usually the first few dreams are a bit unhelpful, like whoever is putting the dreams in Alison Dubois' head doesn't want her to solve the mystery straight away, but take about 45 minutes to do so (or sometimes 90 minutes if it's a 2 parter). It's shame that whoever is in charge of the other side likes to make things difficult for those lucky people able to communicate with it. It's like they enjoy dicking with psychics. If only they weren't so vague then everything could get sorted out and lost wills would be found and murderers would be caught straight away, or maybe even prevented from doing crimes at all.
What are these guardian angel wankers up to? And our dead relatives, who are meant to be watching over us, why don't they do a better job? Is it cos they get a bit sickened by having to watch us do all the disgusting stuff we do behind closed doors and so aren't really watching properly. Maybe with their hands in front of their faces or their fingers in their ears whilst they go "La la la la la". So they miss out on most of the stuff they could help us with. That's why psychics can only hear the first letter of a name. Or whatever else they are trying to tell us.
Anyway this entry is not here to be taking the piss out of mediums, it is here to celebrate the work and genius of Jake Weber (who I am pleased to note was born in England! He's one of ours kids!)
There are well over 70 episodes of this show - I'm a big fan of it by the way, despite being so rational in real life (ha) I enjoy time travelling and supernatural based dramas more than any others - and because Alison Dubois dreams about the crimes, about five times in every single episode Jake Weber is called upon to act being woken up as his wife snaps out of her horrible nightmares. He must have had to act that drowsy waking up thing about 300 times and yet still he does it with total commitment, seemingly without getting bored of his role, which is mainly to be woken up by his wife. I don't care about people who can solve crimes. I like stories about people being woken up when they're trying to sleep.
Maybe I identify with him because of the whole candle story from the other day. But I know there are currently no awards for best waking up portrayal in a spooky drama, but if there were I know for a fact that Jake Weber would definitely win it.
I hope Jake Weber googles this and finds out about the award I am willing for him and just finds out that his work is appreciated. It's got to be tough for him and I am sure the odd little "way to go Jake" will help him do all the future befuddled waking ups that he has to do in the future.

Doing a couple of big gigs this weekend by the way. Shepherd's Bush Friday and Islington Saturday. Great line-ups. Come along if you can - check out the gig guide for details.
