Tuesday 23rd December 2003

I headed back to Cheddar this evening for Christmas number two (hey I'm having two New Years this year, so I've got to balance things up).
Unsurprisingly the motorway was pretty busy, as thousands of motorists headed home for two or three days of arguments and disappointment. The hope that this Christmas might be different fuelled us all, just as much as petrol fuelled our cars.
At one point I looked ahead of me in the darkness and it seemed that someone had let off a firework in celebration. Tiny lights were seemingly falling from the sky. Then my eyes readjusted and I realised that it was just the headlights of the cars in the distance coming down the hill towards me.
Even so it was a strangely beautiful and reassuring hallucination and hopefully symbollic of a happy and celebratory Christmas season for us all.
