It's always nice to catch up on what friends from the past are up to. So imagine my delight when I opened the paper today to discover that Max Carlish who I had performed with in a couple of plays at University had been punched in the face by that bloke who likes eating heroins from off of the Libertines and Kate Moss. click here for article and photo
It's a quite exciting story. I am glad to find out I am not the only person in the modern world to carry a sword.
There was a part of me that was jealous - I was just as good as Max in our student production of "Waiting For Godot" so how comes he was the one who ended up getting punched by a drug fuelled pop-star? That's just typical of my luck. And on a weekend where I could really have done with the publicity too (have I mentioned that the Hammersmith run of Hercules is almost upon us? Ticket sales are picking up, so don't leave it til the last minute to book!)
If only all my old acquaintances could get into fights with famous maniacs then I would be able to catch up with them without all the expense of tracking them down and ringing them up. Max is now making documentaries and allegedly selling pictures of Pete Doherty taking drugs to the Sunday papers (which seems to be why Doherty punched him - I can see his point). Good. Now I all need to do is to be given a Chinese Burn by Johnny Rottens and Max will in turn find out that I am working on a new stand-up act and doing a one man show at the Riverside Studios. If we repeat this kind of behaviour every few years, we will be able to keep in touch without actually having to communicate (or to send each other those embarrassing Christmas round-robins).
And if then price of this is that a few wayward rock-stars are imprisoned for a few days, then I can live with that. You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs.
