Tuesday 17th September 2013

Back in 2008 when I successfully lost weight and kept it off for months, one of the key things I did was to alternate between going to the gym and the swimming pool daily for five or six days a week. It took up a fair amount of time, but it really worked, because, of course, the more I did it, the fitter I became and the more I could do.

I have kept up exercising on and off over the last five years, but never quite with the focus I managed then and with much less swimming, which I think might be the key to the whole thing. It doesn't have the high-impact of the other exercises and tends to concentrate on different muscle groups than the running etc that I do, so it's like having a day off from exercise, but still exercising, if that makes any kind of sense. But I am hopeful that I can go some way to recreating that regime, even if a little more gently due to my slowly degenerating body.

I've done quite well with exercise in the last few days, and today the wife and I went swimming. We went to the pool in Hammersmith which  I used to go to all the time back in 2008, but which I now largely eschew as we're a member of a gym that is slightly nearer and has a bigger pool. But actually this smaller one is probably nicer and quieter. The changing room and pool seemed fuller of macho and idiot men then I remember it being in the past though. There was a lot of Alpha Male stuff going on, not least in the pool, which was pretty quiet when we arrived. There were people in the slow and medium lanes, but no one in the fast lane, so we went in there. That seems logical to me regardless of swimming proficiency. We could always move if proper fast swimmers arrived. Then the medium lane became free, so I moved into it. Why not have the luxury of the whole lane to yourself? Then then slow lane became free. Surely anyone coming into the pool now would go in there and have the lane to themselves.

But I had forgotten about Alpha males. The next man in the pool chose to get inot the fast lane, even though there was an empty lane. It didn't matter too much. There's room for two. But I find it weird that some people seem too proud to go in a lane that they don't think is equal to their self-imposed swimming rank. I think I've written about this before. But in any case that ranking is relative to the other swimmers. If the Olympic squad were training in the pool that guy would have to go in the slow lane anyway. But it shouldn't matter. Surely best to have a lane to yourself.

But then another man arrived and although there were no people in the slow lane, one in the middle and two in the fast lane, he also went into the fast lane. Which is just stupid. It's just a guy waving his dick and saying, "Now I am in here, one of you better move, because I am the fastest - yeah I know the slow lane is empty, but I can't go in there because I am fast."

My wife moved into the middle lane and I moved into the slow lane. I am pretty slow, but I also prefer to have a lane to myself if possible. If it's there.

Another man arrived and headed for the fast lane. He made a big show of standing by the deep end, dipping his goggles in the water, ostentatiously putting them on, waiting to dive in. This was for the benefit of the rest of us. He was trying to say, "Look at me, I am a proper swimmer, look I have the kit and know how to use it. And I am going in the fast lane, obviously, even though there are already two people in it. They should not be in there because I am the fastest. I can't believe they didn't realise I would be here. They really should have kept this lane free for me."

Then these three men who refused to go in a lane that they didn't think they belonged in found themselves involved in a ridiculous tussle as they all swam as fast as possible in order to justify their inclusion in this lane, all refusing to go down a lane, even though there would then be enough room for them to swim unimpeded. Meanwhile I luxuriated in a lane to myself, going at whatever speed I damn pleased.

In the end there were six people in the pool and we could all have had half a lane to ourselves if anyone had dared step down from their cock length comparisons, but which ended up with the worst swimmer in the pool having the most space.
