And as if it hadn’t hit home enough yesterday, today really made me realise that writing and doing tour shows is just not practical any more.
I woke up early, so tired that my one of my eyes actually hurt like it’d been poked. But it hadn’t. Unless someone had broken in and poked me in the night. Late nights and early mornings start to take their toll and I haven’t had a day off for a good while. But there was no way I was going to have the energy to complete script 3 as I’d hoped. I tried to sleep later in the morning, but to no avail. I managed to do about an hour or writing in the car on the way to Birmingham, but decided I’d do better once I was in my dressing room (and we look set to arrive nice and early). But in spite of eating some sweets to give me an energy burst, I crashed instead and was so tired by the time I was sitting in front of the computer that I realised my only hope of doing a half-decent show was to take a nap in the green room. I managed an hour’s kip. And thank God I made that choice (or really my body made it for me). I had recharged enough to be able to do a good show. Being on stage always gives you a boost anyway, but I think without the rest this would have been a real struggle.
In any case I was beset with odd pains and a dry throat, but nothing that was going to stop me having fun. Because of my sleep I hadn’t done  mic check or even stepped on to the stage before the show, which was unusual. My microphone was slightly sticky - I am hoping from removed tape, but you can never be sure what the crew or the last person to use it have been doing with your microphone.
There were about 240 people in, I think, which isn’t too bad, though somewhat down on the old days for Birmingham. I do do a lot of gigs in the area, but six or seven years ago I was getting over 400 in in the Glee Club. Most places have held firm or improved since then, but for some reason the Bovril drinking idiots of Birmingham are not as keen on me as they once were. What have I done to offend the silly-accented chumps. I will never get it.
Only 12 more shows in 11 more theatres - Maidstone, Gloucester, Barnard Castle and Newcastle x 2 this coming week. Late show in Newcastle is close to selling out.
Now my plan is to sleep as long as my wife and kids will allow me and then see if I can fill in the gaps in script 3 in time for the read through on Tuesday and then hope that some elves write script 4 as I sleep on Monday night. Used to work with AIOTM.
