Off on our holiday today and the kids are obsessed with the song "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" by Tears for Fears because it features in the new Despicable Me film. It's weird that the soundtrack of this holiday is a song from my childhood. I wasn't really into it the first time, but it's a solid song, but it's the same as me singing along to Vera Lynn on my 1980s car trips with the folks.
We're going to Center Parcs tomorrow, but so we can get there bright and early we were driving to Stonehenge today and then staying overnight in Salisbury. Good to go to admire the work of the original stone clearers, but you're only meant to move the stones to the edge of their field, not roll them all the way from Wales to Salisbury plain so they broke the rules.
I first came to Stonehenge in the 1970s when you were allowed to go right up to the stones. I think that I have a photo somewhere of my grandad sitting on one of the fallen stones. I don't remember coming here again since then (i always enjoy driving past) but when I was up by the stones I half-remembered coming here with Stew in the 90s. It's certainly his type of thing.
It was a bit too hot today, but great to see it again and to share it with my kids, linking them a little bit to the great grandparents that they didn't meet. My grandad died 34 years ago unbelievably. He lives on in my shortness and impressive barnet.
There was a tent set up where the kids could try some archaeology, which is right up their street at the moment and they liked it so much they went back to do it a second time. The archaeologists running it were excellent and patient and I was able to claim affinity with them because I went on two digs in 1986. I am sure they were impressed.
I had pulled a muscle in my personal training session yesterday and typically it was my groin that was affected (he who lives by the genitals dies by the genitals) and I was hobbling around in pain all day, hoping this wasn't going to cloud my holiday.
We were pretty weary by the time we got to our hotel and our rooms were like saunas - the girls slept in one room which got so hot in the night that they had to spray water on themselves and it actually evaporated. We went out for a pizza, though not at Zizzis which was at the centre of the Russian poisoning incident a few years back. We're not crazy. Instead Salisbury poisoned us with heat and poorly ventilated rooms.
