RICHARD HERRING - Underbelly White Belly (Thurs 3rd August)
Back for his 15th Fringe, BDH favourite Richard Herring has been in buoyant mood in the run up his new stand up show "menage a un" and it's resulted in a more confident and even funnier outing than last year's "Someone Likes Yoghurt". Last year Herring wanted to amuse and irritate in equal measures (to which he succeeded!) and whilst he is still trying to push the comedy boundaries of people's humour, his comic timings make it hard to believe that he has been away from pure stand up for so long as he's certainly back in the full swing of things. His comedic style won't appeal to everyone, with his stories often ending on a non-gag or discussion area. If you're wanting bang-bang-laugh jokes then this isn't the show for you. The self-important broadsheet reviewers may cite post modernist irony, but Rich knows exactly what he is doing with his Pythonesque sketch non-endings being used to full effect. It's part of the boundary pushing and cleverness of his whole act. There's certainly laughs a plenty though and it takes a special comedian to get such funny material from subjects such as child killers! The crowd all loved it though, every minute of it, and if you like your comedy a bit clever, a bit shocking but very funny and beautifully delivered then so will you. And if you like monkey semen then even more so! Herring will probably feel that political and topical comedy is not his forte, but when he does cover such areas in his act, it provides him with some of the strongest and funniest material and should definitely be something he should build upon, but you still want the sex stuff too of course! So please recommend people to come along to see Rich this year. His life may depend on it!!! BDH Rating: 4 / 5
