Teachers’ Strike! And as the child and sibling and uncle and grandson of teachers I support them (and the nurses and firefighters and everyone else fighting for a decent wage).
Ernie got the whole day off and Phoebe had to go in in the afternoon. We told her that the teachers are striking because the government are bad and won’t pay the teachers what they are worth and what they need to live on. Showing great political cunning (and understanding of the Tories) she said that she was going to make friends with the government, get them to give her all the money and then she’d give it to the teachers and the nurses. I mean, it’s basically foolproof and apart from the last step it’s exactly what happens anyway. What a girl.
I am at a loss to understand why anyone supports the Tories now, but about 25% of the population think they’re doing the best possible job. Out of the options available. I guess we should give them a chance!
The most surprising news of the day is that someone must actually read this blog, as my Edinburgh Fringe “boycott” made the BBC website
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-64484359. I should have said in the original blog that I am aware there’s always been a level of elitism at the Fringe - it’s always been very hard for anyone with proper responsibilities our limited funds to go there - most working comics can’t give up a month of paid gigs to go to Edinburgh and lose money. But it was possible when I started to have no money and no responsibilities and for the loss to be a pretty good gamble. It’s also a problem pervading the industry - that the independently wealthy have a massive advantage. Comedy should be a business that relies mainly on talent (the desire to work hard is pretty much essential as well though), but we’re getting further away from parity than we were 30 years ago.
And I realised today that I had completed by third Dry January in a row. Plus all the other months in between. It’s only 25 months. That’s nothing.
