As I enter the Picasso phase of my comedy - you have to learn how to be a master of your art, before attempting to recapture the innocence of childhood - it's so interesting to see the crazy and individual ways that that kids's brains actually work. There's no way I can capture it.
My son Ernie's brain is unique and unfettered and unpredictable unless he has an object that looks even vaguely like a penis in which case he will definitely pretend it is his penis.
His school doesn't have a school uniform (and of course it's the school holidays anyway) but for the last few days he's decided he wants to be smart and has started wearing a jacket and his previous school tie everywhere he goes. I like the detail that it's one of those pre-made ties on a bit of elastic and he's sometimes wearing it with a T-shirt. He's also got some shades (with mirrors on the inside so he can see what's going on behind him). I am not sure if he thinks he's in the CIA or a Man in Black, but tonight we went to the playground when we were walking the dog and it was funny to see him looking like he was a little businessman whilst all the other kids wore less surprising clothes.
He is his own person for sure. I love it. Though he's still at an age where you can assert your individuality without any payback. I hope he can weather the storm of the years where it's harder to do that. If you can come out the other side still doing what you want, rather than succumbing to peer pressure, then an interesting life awaits you.
He is the sweetest boy and on the way back from the walk he said he wanted to go to the shop to buy some flowers and chocolate for his mum to thank her for all her hard work. I resisted asking what I was going to get. He'd raided our pot of pound coins and had brought enough of them to pay for some roses and a Terry's chocolate orange and also some Reece's Pieces (though he bought enough of those for several people for some reason).
I had to wait outside with the dog, but it was beyond cute to watch this little businessman choosing presents and going up to pay in pound coins. I am not sure the man behind him who was buying cans of beer appreciated the slow payment method, but there we go.
Catie was obviously delighted with this surprise gift. What a smooth operator my boy is. What a delightfully sweet thing to witness. Also where are my fucking flowers?
