I was performing at a charity gig for testicular cancer in Bethnall Green tonight. Actually I think it was against testicular cancer. I don't really look at the cause. ANY gig for ANY charity and I am in.
It ended up being quite a palaver getting there and back, as the trains to London were running much slower than usual. It took so long to get to London that I thought I might accidentally have got on the wrong train and I think we might have been travelling a different route than usual. Bethnall Green was harder to get to than I had anticipated. The changes of the tubes involved long walks and the venue was a good 20 minute walk from Liverpool Street (not helped by me going the wrong way).
It was a good burst of exercise and I like exploring London. As I passed a building site, a scrawny fox popped out on to the pavement, mere feet from me and other pedestrians. He did not give a fuck and paused and ambled with no fear or acknowledgment that we were still in daylight.
I thought about taking a photo, then thought I couldn't be bothered, but he was around for so long that I managed to get a shot of him before he disappeared behind more building work on the other side of the road.
Loved the little critter's attitude. Living in London makes you a Londoner.
The gig went well - maybe the second last time I will do my ball back material (it will probably feature a bit in
the St Albans gig, but going to do some new stuff there too). I had some new stuff printed up in my back pocket tonight, but it seemed more appropriate to do the testicle stuff - pretty much everyone I met as I came into the gig was a monoballer (or married to one).
I was on first, did my 20 minutes and then came home. Again I went a slightly circuitous route back to Liverpool Street, but passed this charming old shop front (though with this part of London you can never be sure if this kind of stuff is real or retro-fitted -
in this case it seems it might be a bit of both). I wonder if the person living there gets people knocking on the door trying to buy paper bags.
I went back a different way, jumping on the Elizabeth Line to Farringdon (again a long walk through the station) and managing to get there two minutes before the train I needed. I walked 8.5km during the day (including a dog walk). I thought I might be home just after 9pm, but the train went super slow again and it was 9.40pm before I walked through my door.
It was a round trip of about 5 hours which is insane for a 20 minute set, but I appreciated the exercise and the chance to see a paper bag manufacturer and a feisty fucking fox.
A fun Newsround today where I mainly amused only myself by discovering a way I could make Ally's hair go up whilst he was talking just using one hand. I finished the episode feeling full of joy, like I'd had a couple of Caffe Nero strong coffees. Perhaps I am just taking Class A drugs and am forgetting,
It's a really good one, packed with amazing tales from this extraordinary woman.
Here's a video clip.
