Oh yeah, that’s why I don’t go to bed after 1am any more. Slightly tough day of child care (and the cough from my bug still persisting) but some fun stuff in there. Phoebe’s team had a deserved 6-4 victory this morning, with Phoebe playing up player of the match, thanks to some stout and bold defending. It’s thrilling to see how this team of 8 year olds has improved over the last few months - playing as a team now and with confidence and commitment. They’ve gone from losing every game to pretty much winning every one and Phoebe is loving it - though was distraught when the opposition scored two quick goals in the final quarter when she was keeper - there wasn’t much she could have done. The team had gone to sleep and the shots were good ones.
Later me and her went out for a bike ride on the proper road (for a little bit). She wanted to practice signalling, but got distracted when we passed a cafe and asked if we could stop for a bit of cake. I am a soft touch and I like cake, so agreed after not much persuasion. We then went off road and she bombed along a bumpy track, her self-confidence knowing no bounds. It’s the first time I’ve been on my bike, pretty much since we moved here. It’s rusted slightly in the garage and I had to pump the tyres up. I had had thoughts of cycling into the nearby towns, but the roads are bendy and treacherous and the cyclists pretty annoying and so far I have avoided it.
I walked Wolfie in my secret stone field tonight (not the one I do the podcasts from, which is just a distraction in case the stone Stasi catch me). There’s a cairn at the top of the hill that I don’t go to often, but which is made up of big stones and is visible from the other side of the valley. I managed to get to it today to add a few more white stones to it. It felt like a pilgrimage. My energy is still low and carrying big stones up the last few steps had me out of breath. But what a thing of beauty it is.
York City lost against Torquay in a relegation 6 pointer. I hope Torquay survive and they’ve had a remarkable run of form to almost do so, but I’d prefer York to stay up. They probably will, but I’ve supported this club long enough to know that probably will means definitely won’t. They need to get some points against Aldershot or rely on the incompetence of others.
Phoebe and me watched her appearance on Twitch of Fun together at bedtime, her resting her head on my shoulder. It was a bit of a daddy/daughter day today, with Catie looking after Ernie most of the time (short straw) and it was nice to have this rare bit of intimacy at the end of the day as we laughed at her antics and my exasperated reactions.
These are the days.
Imagine how good they’d be with sleep.
