I am trying to get myself into some kind of routine so that I don't waste my remaining day/days (somewhere between 1 and 10,000) and I nailed this morning. I did my daily puzzles whilst making breakfasts for the kids and me and then got on with making lunch (all before 8am), then took the boy to school, came back finished off preparing my lunchtime pie, wrote my blog, prepped for my podcast, realised I had half an hour to slot in a Newsround and then interviewed the incredible Matt King (aka Superhans) until midday. Then the prepped pie in the oven, I did some podcast intros and wrote a blurb of the podcast I'd done and settled down to some Red Dragon Pie (and do you know how hard it is to get red dragon these days).
Life is fine as long as you feel useful and are getting stuff accomplished and don't have time to stop and think about the unfairness of ageing and the terror of an infinity of being dead (or worse everlasting life or worse everlasting life in a big fire - hope if there is a God He isn't a psychopath even though all the evidence points that way).
I hadn't made a red dragon pie for a while. It's a vegetarian recipe and no dragons were harmed, though I boiled the life out of some aduki beans.
The recipe comes from Sarah Brown's Vegetarian Kitchen, which I was about to write about, but thought I might have blogged before -
And yes I have. Goddamn it.
It's crazy to think I've been using this book for over 40 years - and mainly returning to the same four recipes. Maybe I should branch out and try some of the other recipes that are not splattered with decades old bean juice. Not that kind of bean juice. I didn't enjoy vegetarianism THAT much.
Anyway, thanks to sexy Sarah Brown for all the ideas, though you are also indirectly responsible for a huge volume of farts and global warming might be your fault alone.
I slowed down a little bit in the afternoon, but I am still under the weather so don't feel too guilty about that.
I just need to feel like I am useful and needed. And talking to a puppet for a tight five minutes each day for the delectation of 10s of people and the annoyance of 5s of people gives me the illusion that I am doing something.
Luckily I am needed for about five more years as I have kids and it would be annoying for Catie if she had to do it all on her own. It will be harder to convince myself I have any value once they are autonomous.
Then I will have to spend all day making and painting wonky pots to give myself the illusion of relevance.
Come away, come away death and in sad cypress let me be laid.
No Rich, the puppets. Think of the puppets and those who love them. And more importantly those who are annoyed and angered by what I am doing. They are the real audience. Do let me know if you're one of them. You're the only thing that makes this life worth living.
