I was woken up at around 8am by the sound of a car alarm going off in the street below.
Strangely it was exactly the same type of car alarm that often goes off outside my house in Balham.
I was still half asleep and for several seconds I was extremely confused and couldn't work out where I was. I felt like I was at home, but something wasn't right. This wasn't my bed. This wasn't my bedroom. But I couldn't remember where I was.
I don't think this sensation is something I have experienced since I was a child. It was very disorientating and I couldn't claim that alcohol was responsible as I hadn't had any the night before.
Then it came back to me. I was in Melbourne. But I was actually really happy to have had the chance to go though that confusion again.
It reminded me of waking up at my grandmother's house at some unspecified point in my early life. It was only a shadow of a memory, a fragment of a shared emotion, but I smiled to myself and went back to sleep.
Nostalgic for the past, nostalgic for home.
