More RHLSTPs and we're now over halfway through this current Leicester Square Theatre run and at last the theatre was basically full for a cracking pair of interviews.
I'd popped out for dinner at Pret A Manger, because I am classy and as I returned to the theatre and waited at the traffic lights the man next to me turned to me and said, “You're one of my heroes.” Which is an astonishing thing to happen and I wondered why he'd set his hero bar so low. There are people out there saving lives after all. Then the man started crossing the road without really looking and there was a bicycle speeding towards him.
I told him to watch out, thus possibly saving his life and proving that he was correct. Not all heroes wear capes. Or can be arsed to do heroic things unless they're really easy.
It was lovely to see Armando again. Incredibly it's four years since he last did the show and I briefly saw him at a funeral in late 2019. He is effortlessly funny and an astonishing comedy genius, so it's an absolute pleasure to spend time in his company. A story he told about what a supporting artist said to him on the set of Veep is the highlight of the series so far. He also was quite pessimistic about the future of the world, so it's not all laughs.
I'd watched a few episodes of Avenue 5 this morning and there is some incredible stuff in this show. The scene where the passengers of the space ship become convinced that they are in a reality TV show and on earth all along is one of the funniest and saddest things I've seen in a long time and perfectly skewers people who think they are always being lied to.
I was also very impressed with Rosie Holt, another comedian who has shown that you can breakthrough using the internet alone. It's great to see the cream rise to the top in this way without having to impress the gatekeepers. If you make something good and people RT it, then you can make it. What I love about Rosie's work is that there is subtlety  in it. Today's politicians and commentators are so extreme that the temptation of most would be to wildly exaggerate, but that's not only pretty difficult given how extreme they are, but also the wrong instinct. The fact that so many people have thought Rosie's sketches are real - and some very smart people included- shows how brilliantly she has walked the line.
As always a pleasure, though at one point I was so tired that I couldn't think of Adam Sandler's name. I've been pushing things a bit too hard in recent weeks, but hopefully I can recuperate a bit this week (though am recording a book club podcast tomorrow because I am an idiot).
