The positive thing about ending the main RHLSTP show is I will have a bit more time to work on other projects. Maybe.
But I don't know which projects I am going to focus on - there are a few things that I want to do. Also most days just thinking of something to write about in Warming Up and choosing a news story to riff on in Newsround seems to take up most of the day.
Have I made a mistake ending my one project that actually makes me some money in order to concentrate on esoteric stuff that won't keep the wolf from the door? And who keeps sending this wolf to my door? And why is the wolf only after money? I have kids. And tasty if slightly gnarly limbs of my own. Why isn't the wolf eating those, rather than pressurising me into parting with cash, which as a wolf, it can't even use?
I assume the wolf is working for someone who exchanges the money for something better than an old man's leg and a couple of kids - what's wrong with my kids? A wolf would be lucky to eat them - but even so, it's a weird system.
Also it could backfire if I domesticate the wolf. I just need to find out what it's being paid in and offer it more than that and then send him to eat the person who has been sending it here.
Where was I?
Oh yeah, writing Warming Up is tough when nothing has happened and I don't think I am making a mistake in concentrating on esoteric stuff. I'd rather do the esoteric stuff. Somehow I've always managed to make a living despite largely concentrating on stuff that is wilfully non-commercial. Or maybe I've just understood that you only need a small and dedicated group of followers who are prepared to turn up at your house with torches and frighten the wolf away.
Or back a kickstarter or buy a badge, if they don't live in the Hitchin area.
Perhaps the nicest thing about RHLSTP and the esoteric projects is that there is a lovely community at the heart of it, who, when they're able have backed charity stuff I've been involved with or been there for each other.
United in our love for the sparsely populated centre of the Venn diagram encompassing self-playing snooker, stone clearing and ventriloquism, we have each other's backs.
This week on social media, I was delighted to direct people towards long-term badger and sarcastic commentator on all my podcasts, Vaun Earl Norman, who has been going through a tough time and
needs a mobility scooter. After which, I recognised several names in the list of donators. People who might not know Vaun (probably better off that way- he's a monster) but who are happy to help someone with the same weird taste as them.
You can keep your Oscars and your jacuzzis full of supermodels. Getting Vaun a chunk of a mobility scooter is reward enough for me
Oh wait, no. I meant I want the awards and the jacuzzi... no takebacksies? Damn.
To be fair to him, he's been paying badger money for so long that we probably haven't fully reimbursed him yet.
I am hoping to do some proper writing that I might get paid for (though Warming Up and Newsround might be all I can achieve in a day). I looked at the first couple of chapters of the Cheddar Beheader today and it seems pretty solid to me. (I think I've already put it up on here, but I will put what I have so far behind the paywall to save you looking for it).

The bad news is that James Acaster has had to pull out of RHLSTP next Monday. The good news is that Ed Gamble (essentially the same person) will be stepping in. The other good news is that James will now be a guest on 26th October. And I will just be asking him Poppadom or Bread? for one hour.
