I had another terrible night's sleep and thought I might have blown Bank Holiday Monday, but Catie let me have a bit of a lie-in and I was surprisingly sprightly. So I played some B-ball with the kids and then took them up the rec to play football. It was a sunny day so we hadn't even brought jumpers, let alone coats and then got caught in a heavy shower. We hid under a tree and had fun running to the next cover and onwards. Life is a game.
I let the kids choose a treat from the shop and Ernie went for something that looked like shower gel, but was some kind of sour strawberry liquid that you just poured on to your tongue. It is possibly the least healthy thing that I've seen in my unhealthy life. It tasted awful and concentrated, like drinking undiluted squishy. Ernie loved it and didn't go on a Bart and Milhouse bender, but I didn't let him have much.
Unusually we ate both meals today at the kitchen table and not in front of the TV. It was a lot of fun (well mostly) with the kids full of banter and bad zingers. When I was a kid we had all meals round the kitchen table, at least whilst all the kids were still at home (I remember eating dinner in front of Masterteam with Angela Ripon when I was a teenager - Angela Ripon was the host, she wasn't having dinner with us). Maybe our kids will look nostalgically back at the times that they ate dinner watching people playing Minecraft on Youtube and feel they've let something go by letting their own kids eat virtual dinner in a virtual world (or whatever).
We're not going to go back to traditional family meal times for every meal, but I hope we do this a lot more.
I'd thought we might go on some family trip today, but the parents were weary and the weather was changeable, so I took the kids out to search for Pokemon with Pokemon Go. Which is an excellent way to trick everyone into doing exercise. I had no idea there were so many Pokemon in Hertfordshire.
I have to say out of all the things that my kids are into Pokemon is the worst one. The books are particularly awful and terribly written. I can't even understand what I am reading out. It's noticeable because the standard of kids' entertainment is usually much higher these days. Oh apart from the books about fairies that Ernie got into recently. They were utter dogshit too, but I think they might have been quite old. There were hundreds of the fucking things too.
As you can see, a pretty dull family day that was good for me, but meh for you. Still better than the Pokemon books though.
