Joe Lycett had told me his whole plan before the podcast last week as he didn’t want me to question him too  much about if he was really going to shred the money as he didn’t think he could convincingly lie. But well done to him, as he got the maximum impact out of the whole thing. And well done to me for not blabbing. I a the real hero here.
It’s fun that all the journalists who criticised him for destroying money will now have to find another reason to be upset. But what an effective way of raising a concern. He never expected it would change Beckham’s mind, but it’s been a great way to highlight his poor choices in this matter. And good on Joe for his donation to charity. What a ride!
More controversy at the football as the team or captain was not allowed to wear the armband promoting LGBTQ+ rights. It’s a huge fucking mess and I feel a little sorry for the players who will bear the brunt of the bad feeling for this, when it’s FIFA that have really fucked up on this from the start. But of course it’s not unreasonable to think they should have gone with the courage of their convictions and  I understand why there is proper anger about this. Football has been doing a good job of making itself more inclusive and for everyone and I can see why many people will now no longer feel a part of the sport.
It was great to see the players taking the knee, but if they can do gestures like that then there must be something they can do pre match. I suggested miming wanking each other off. I would have suggested actually wanking each other off, but you don’t want the players being all sleepy at the start of the game. But there must be something that they can do to let the world know their true feelings on this. Hopefully the highlighting of all these issues will help to move things on in the long run, but it’s insane that the World Cup is being held in this country and everyone knows the reasons why.
I watched the match whilst prepping for today’s RHLSTPs and again, what a shame that an incredible performance was clouded by this controversy. I suspect that, as everyone has predicted, if the home countries do well then the other issues will slip into the background for many people. I was still swept along by it all. I am hopeful that something may be arranged for England vs Wales that will make some kind of recompense.
Too late?
Two more (I mean one more) fun RHLSTPs tonight with James Acaster and Sikisa. James seemed in good form and has returned to stand up and is trying to confront the elements that he wasn’t enjoying before. He’s an exceptional talent, as much as I tried to wind him up by saying I thought his hilarious book was a waste of time and that music should be banned. And Sikisa is a fascinating woman and a very funny comic and it was great to meet her and find out what a huge nerd she is. The pair of them were swopping Pokemon in the dressing room and so anyone who thinks all comedians aren’t in arrested development is a fool.
I got cabs in and back today. The drivers were a bit more risk taking this week, especially the one who went at 80 in the pouring rain, but I made it through alive. And the one on the way home had to stop for a wee, which I could identify with. We are all the same.
