My long hair has been driving me crazy - it's about a year since my last cut and it had got so long that I looked exactly like Cousin It, though I did make the resemblance more acute by always wearing a bowler hat and sunglasses. I determined to go into town today and get it all cut off. Every hair on my body removed.
I was going to go short, though I was nervous about that. As much as the long hair makes me look like a suspect old man who you wouldn't leave your kids with, short hair might just make me look as old and worn down as I am. Ernie has gone short recently after having crazy long hair and it might be nice if we both confirmed to terrible regressive stereotypes. But was there a way I could still look rock n roll, without being arrested or have people standing up for me on the bus.
Of course there was. My hairdresser, who I haven't seen for several months, exclaimed how wonderful my hair looked as I entered the shop. To be fair when it's clean and it falls right it did look good. But I am not sure it's in a hairdresser's interest to say that hair looks good as the client enters the premises. I should have said, "Great" and turned around and left. I told her I wanted to take it all off and she seemed concerned and upset by that.
She asked me how I wanted it - tapered? above the ears? And it's been so long since I had short hair that I didn't know. She suggested we took it back more to the length it was last time I was here (and bless her for remembering me) and then we could take off more if I wanted.
So I wimped out of doing anything too drastic, lost half the length and a lot of the bulk and to be fair, it looked good. Better than it would have done short and a lot better than the mess I had come in with. So there was a middle ground. It was in the middle. I should have realised.
One day I might get a haircut befitting of my age, but not today.

Another huge guest announcement for RHLSTP. Armando Iannucci will be joining me at the Leicester Square Theatre on 5th Feb. Still a few £18.50 tickets left if you're quick. And worth booking ahead for the 12th Feb too. I am likely to get good guests and the cheap tickets will go fast, so stop goal hanging and get buying.
Also we're working on fixing up an alternate venue for Cardiff as St David's is closed for the year - it might not be the same date, but hold on to your tickets for now and hopefully they will transfer them across
