A weird Alan Partridgy day as we waited to go to our gig in our hotel, which was centred around a golf course. I left my room at midday and sat in the sprawling bar area, trying to write AIOTM and eating a very expensive toasted sandwich. Luckily things started to slotting a little bit into place. I have a start and a finish, just need some tosh to go in the middle.
It's odd to get stranded in a place you would never usually go and not being entirely sure where you even are. We arrived in the middle of the night and I almost sleepwalked my way to the room. I was too tired to work out how the room was heated and woke up because it was so cold. Then saw the radiator that I had entirely missed last night, which was, of course, turned off.
Waking up freezing cold in a golfing hotel somewhere in the Midlands is probably another great showbiz metaphor. And I am not one of the golfing comedians.
But I was out of my room by midday and so not choice but to try and do the writing that I so urgently need to finish. And I did manage to come up with quite a dramatic ending to the series which at least ties some of the loose ends together. And makes it seem impossible that we will ever do any more. Though I like to leave stuff in impossible situations and then let the future me figure out how to get out of them. I resented past me leaving episode 5 up in the air, but found a way of quickly resolving the issues.
I was sent links to watch the whole toaster sex robot saga, which I really enjoyed and Rachel Stubbins and Gemma the toaster robot in particular give great performances. It's 25 minutes long when you put them all together. It's good to know that these inserts are going to be added to the more knockabout studio bits. It's all taken such a lot of time and effort and there's still so much to do that it doesn't really feel like anything that people are going to actually see. But if Hollywood want to pay me to make the full toaster robot movie, then I am for that. Or if we can find someone who will pay me to make a series then I'd love to do more. But for now I am just thinking about giving you maximum value for your contributions and hoping what we've done is funny.
I have got through this first little section of the tour proper and done five gigs, and spent two nights away, whilst not particularly well. I feel a little battered, but happy with it all. A sold out gig in the admittedly small, but brilliant Comedy Junction in Sutton Coldfield (where I can't actually achieve my projected tour minimum audience as there isn't room for 100 people) was a good way to end. Though I only have one day off before a gig at the Leicester Comedy Festival.
Back home in the early hours of the morning. And though everyone was asleep, it was reassuring and bizarrely comforting to see my daughter's toys on the floor. Even though she wasn't there in person to see me, this was such a clear indication of her recent presence and I felt happy to be back where I now belong.
