What a time to be alive! Who knows what will happen next in upside downy world? Not me!
Nearly every vote of the last two or three years has been baffling to me, but at least this one comes as a surprise in the right direction. It gives us a bit of hope for the future and more importantly for the young, who have finally realised the power that they wield. When you see how effectively UKIP have managed to dictate policy with a minority of the population supporting them, think what could be done if everyone under 40 got together, with actual right on their side. I had assumed like many that Labour were dead and the Conservatives were in til the 2030s, but hubris and incompetence, combined with Corbyn hitting his stride and the electorate being sick of being talked down to and lied to by the newspapers has created a situation where Labour could be in power by the end of the year and the Conservatives divisions opened up to put them on the edge of destruction. Maybe not. But maybe. And you wouldn’t have thought that two days ago.
I was wrong. But nearly everyone was. Even the Corbyn supporters weren’t exactly right. He needed to seem (and maybe also be) weak for any of this to happen. The turnaround from the recent local elections is extraordinary. And perhaps if anyone had realised it was going to be this close and some of the turnarounds were going to be so great Labour might actually have done enough this week to wrestle their way to power.
I mean it’s certainly not all good news. For the moment May is still in control with the horrible force of the DUP behind her. But it can’t last long and she can’t do much and she surely can’t survive. She was doing this to gain an unassailable majority and just revealed herself to be the less effective leader. Never assume, it make an ass out of um and e.
I really wanted to see a political party move this country into the 21st Century and though we’re not there yet, the Tories seem weak and old-fashioned now, especially now they are wedded to a party with religious roots that seem positively medieval. It’s crazy how this has spun around. Exhilarating, exciting and I am glad that I was so wrong. I haven’t entirely got over all my objections to Corbyn’s Labour party, but it’s the best hope, I think, for making our country fairer and better and giving us under 50s some kind of fucking chance.
I was hungover and tired of course, ahead of another show and an important meeting about the sitcom. It went OK, though I needed to pitch like crazy and might have done better had I had more sleep. I think I could have done better, but the project is still ongoing. I have to go and do some more work on it to show the potential for a series. I hope this is one of the Universes where it ends up getting made. But if not, then it will be made in an infinite number of other Universes, so I can’t complain.
The theatre was again about half full for the penultimate showing of “The Best”, but it was a really great audience and in spite of my fatigue and brain fug, I was very sharp and playful and did one of my best performances yet. It was a lot of fun. And it’s saying something that one can still enjoy a show after so many performances.
