I am a bit fed up of hotel breakfasts. I generally ask tour managers to get me rooms without breakfast, because when there's a buffet style selection I end up eating a lot more than I want to and I'd rather go and order something in a cafe or bring a little pot of instant porridge and eat it in my room. Bollings though has booked nearly all the rooms with breakfasts (he claims they are all included, but that seems surprising to me, but why would he lie to me?). I am very happy for him to have breakfast included, I just don't really want it myself. I could, of course, eschew the breakfasts and do my own thing, but that seems wasteful and I still operate under the rules I had when I first came into this business - if something is free/included you have to get as much of it as possible. Back in 1989 this was necessary for survival, but not any more, but I can't beat that habit. You never know when those days of hunger will return.
And sometimes the breakfast is from a menu or really good and I am glad to have it. Often though it's a bit horrible or I just get sick of the same thing every day.
This morning I came down for breakfast and I just couldn't face anything bacon or egg based again. I've basically stopped eating bacon. I had some toast and cereal and then went out to a cafe for a smoothie and a decent coffee and maybe I should have done that in the first place. Later at the supermarket I bought four porridge pots for the next leg of the tour (though I will be spending two nights at my parents this week where breakfast is definitely included).
I was back home for lunch and after school my son gave me lots of hugs whilst my daughter pretended she hadn't realised I'd been gone.
If you're reading this down the line Phoebe and I am not around any more. I know you loved me really. Or at least I know you love me now.
