Of course, now the tour is over my body has gone into shut down mode. I did not sleep well last night and found it very hard to get up this morning and was in a cloud of mild dizziness and nausea most of the day.
We took the kids to buy new sofas and carpets for the new house and then went to see Despicable Me 4. I have to take my hat off to whoever created the Minions, but Phoebe, especially is obsessed with them. She draws them all the time, wants all the merch, has the backpack and soft toy and King Bob is her Jesus.
I wondered today about the moment that she turns against this fad. One day Minions won't be the most important thing in her life, but when will that be and what will be the catalyst that gets her chucking all the stuff away and no longer drawing Bob? I can't remember what it was with the PJ Masks or any of the other things she once adored and now isn't bothered about. I can't remember what it was with my own obsessions. What made me stop playing Subbuteo against myself and doing all the league tables and stats? Thank God I don't do anything like that any more.
At what point did I stop worshipping Python or Rik Mayall so that their next project or the availability of all their old stuff online didn't feel me with an urgent desire to ingest it all immediately? Rick and Morty were recently so important to me that I watched the shows illegally a day before they were released and now I don't even know if I am fully up to date (but that's probably more to do with the recent ones not having been as good - though isn't that just your love and obsession dissipating?)
Every little incarnation of your own kids eventually disappears to be replaced without you noticing by the next one - like Harry Hill's mum's potato scoop, so slowly that you don't even notice how big they now are.
The Minions have held good for a while with Phoebe, but one day she will poo poo them. I'd say the same about me, but she has pretty much always poo pooed me.
We bought both kids an overpriced Minions cup, as a reward for good reports, but mainly cos I am a soft touch and then watched the film together.
I was in the room at least, but I was so tired that it was like the early days of parenting where cinemas had just the right condition to catch up on sleep and I drifted off, hovering in that state where you're half dreaming and half listening, but suffice to say I had no idea what was going on when I woke up.
Coincidentally I also fell asleep during Despicable Me 3 on my birthday in 2017. I don't think it's any shade thrown on Despicable Me. So don't take offence Steve Carrell or Russell Brand if you've got a google alert on your name. Russell wasn't in the new one for some reason.
There could have been no better birthday present than that sleep in 2017 (apart from meeting Janet Ellis and seeing a robot of Gemma Chan - I am definitely dreaming this life) and it was welcome again today.
I hadn't realised how much the tour had taken out of me, but it's always the case that you somehow more or less hold it together until a run of something stops and then store up all your exhaustion and illness for that!
