Off to a wedding today and one that began at the unusually inconvenient time of 8am. Luckily it wasn't too far away from our house and also it was a Sri Lankan wedding, so the breakfast (and lunch) were made up of amazing food. Also you have to respect the traditions of other cultures, but still. Come on guys. You can have breakfast at midday on a Saturday.
It wasn't just the kids who were reluctant for such an early start, but we somehow got everyone into their best clothes and the car by 7.15. Sadly after the excitement of nearly fitting back into my suits after the cancer treatment, I have let myself go and had struggled to find anything to fit me that wasn't jeans and a sweatshirt.
I found one pair of reasonably smart trousers, but no jacket, but just about got away with it. Phoebe zinged me and my propensity to (comedically) blame my cancers for everything and said "Oh no, my cancer has made all my clothes shrink." Admittedly putting on weight is not something generally associated with cancer and chemo (it does happen though, so check in your prejudice). Also admittedly my weight gain is nothing to do with cancer or chemo so it was a good roast from my eldest.
The wedding was at Brocket Hall, former home of the controversial I'm a Celebrity contestant,
Lord Brocket who charmingly fell foul of the law when he attempted insurance fraud by (I believe) burying his vintage cars in his grounds and claiming they were stolen. Was he really found out because the person from the insurance company found an exhaust pipe sticking out of the ground?
More recent allegations are less charming.
There was a corridor lined with photos of celebrities who presumably had once been to or filmed at the hall, though they were all of a certain vintage and mostly no longer with us. Probably the best way to date it was that one of the pictures was of Lorraine Chase. Most of the photos had the name of the person on them, apart from one of Robert Powell and Sharon Maugham which for some reason was simply labelled Holby City. Which seemed a bit rude. Robert Powell played Jesus, for Christ's sake.
I wouldn’t be surprised if King Harald V and Ratko Mladic were up there somewhere. Though the more likely Rat would be Roland.
The service was colourful and loud and surprisingly long and quite a departure, I'd imagine, from a lot of the weddings at Brocket Hall. Lorraine Chase sadly did not attend.
I was home in time to follow the football. York City are third in League 2. Let's just end the season here shall we?
