Tuesday 2nd February 2010

A sense of deja vu tonight as I sat backstage waiting to go on at the Leicester Square Theatre, as Joe Mangel performed his "Defending the Caveman". It was because I had already been here, when last year's show also followed Joe Mangel performing "Defending the Caveman".
Maybe he's been performing "Defending the Caveman" every day since I was last here. Perhaps he has been imprisoned in the basement and isn't allowed to escape until he's done this show a million times. People simply can't get enough of being told how men and women are different.
Unlike lazy, lazy Joe Mangel I am doing a different show than last time. And I've been looking forward to this run, after the success of last year and our triumphant 100th podcast.
It was a little step back to reality as the place was only around half full tonight, but it was a receptive crowd. There were a small group of what I am guessing were podcast fans who whooped when I first swore and were babbling a little throughout like they wanted to get involved. But they were not talking loud enough for me to have to engage with them and they did not become too badly behaved.
I was a bit tired after my long weekend and the celebrations after the podcast, but I got through it and kept the energy up. I hadn't expected to be doing the whole show as it's a relatively late start (9.30pm), but the people at the theatre wanted to have an interval and so it means the show doesn't end until about 11.15. Just so you know if you have to get a train home! But unlike Joe Mangel and it seems every other comedian who plays this theatre (tickets seem to average around about £20 for other shows in this venue) I have insisted on keeping my prices low at only £12.50 (plus ridiculous ticketweb tax), because I am not greedy. I think the late start is encouraging people to come at the weekend where tickets are selling a lot faster, so do book ahead or come on a week day! The Evening Standard will be in on the 3rd, so if you're at a loose end do pop down and help me create a good atmosphere!
I won't keep up with this shameless plugging. Almost certainly won't.
