I had a lot of distractions away from the work in hand today. I should have been researching my RHLSTP guests, but a new phone arrived and I had to try and set that up (and due to the fact that Apple have never resolved - as far as I know- the fact that my iTunes log in is different than my iCloud one it essentially meant eventually starting from scratch and then reloading everything - Apple are cunts). Then my cat did a massive stinking ammonia wee over the side of the litter tray (thankfully on the bathroom tiles, but it was still a bugger to clean up as it seeped under the tray). I ended up lugging a bin of cat litter downstairs, which turned out to have a hole in it. I cleaned the floor, washed the litter tray with a hose outside and yet still I couldn’t get the smell of cat wee out of my nostrils. I had a bath, changed clothes but still the phantom wee stuck with me.
I had managed to do a bit of research too, and more or less finally had my phone working (though needed to reorganise all the apps) before heading to the Leicester Square Theatre for the fifth night in a row. I have been trying to get back on a diet and failing badly, mainly just cos I am tired all the time so craving chocolate and booze, and I fell off the choco-wagon and popped into my Sainsburys Local for a twirl (once upon a time I bought 9 yoghurts here). I picked up a Twirl, which has hardly any chocolate in it and took it to the non-judgemental check out machines that have replaced the sarcastic staff here. I popped in my 50p for the Twirl and then spotted that there was 45p sitting in the return coin shoot. Someone had forgotten to pick up their change and were I to be the kind of dishonest man who would steal someone else’s cash under the law of Finder’s Keepers, I would have had a Twirl for 5p.
I got a Twirl for 5p and felt amazing. I also realised this was an ideal kind of subject of morality to discuss with Adam Buxton. Which must be worth another 4p. So I’d got a Twirl for 1p.
To be fair I am a stickler for Finders Keepers. On Saturday I’d been coming home and had to stop to help Phoebe with something. I was in a bit of a tizzy. A man stopped and picked up a fiver from behind me. “Is this yours?” he asked, holding it to me to take. I don’t know if he’d seen me drop it, or if I was just nearest. It’s quite possible it was mine, but I couldn’t be sure, so I told him to keep it. And the Universe rewarded me by returning 45p and a potential podcast conversation. I think that’s fair.
The podcasts were again, just tremendous fun. Jessica Knappett and Adam Buxton are two of the best people and we had as much fun backstage (some of which will be available to monthly badge holders - join them) as we did on stage. And we had a lot of fun on stage. I won’t give away too many spoilers, but the Twirl and the cat wee led us to some unexpected places and the whole evening ended up with a sing off that had be crying with laughter. The Paul Merton podcast will be up on Wednesday and then they will go weekly from there. It shows no signs of running out of steam. So far, it seems to be more fun than ever. Tonight was sold out and the first one was only a dozen or so tickets short. Unbelievably there are still some tickets for next week’s Collings and Herrin reunion (with additional Zoe Lyons)
Believe me, it really is even more fun live. Spread the word if you’ve been and know what I am saying to be true. 3 solid hours of entertainment for just £15. Come on.
