So the quest to find the dog's Airtag came at lunchtime. I have to say that since she was a puppy Wolfie has never run off without quickly coming back, so this is the only time we've had to use the Airtag. To find the Airtag. I am not sure the Airtag is worth it. It also says something that we Airtag our dog, but not our kids. Priorities.
I had had another look on the early morning dog walk but again, no dice.
We'd told the kids that there would be chocolate for anyone involved in finding the lost item and so Ernie in particular was very keen to be in that team. We were maybe half a mile away and he asked if I could make the tag beep. He thought he'd be able to hear it, proclaiming proudly that he had very big ears.
But I waited until we were nearer and satisfyingly for me, nobody could work out where the bloody thing was based on the chirruping sound alone. So it wasn't just my old ears. It was only then that I remembered that the app also comes with a directional button that tells you how close you are to the object. What an idiot. So we used that. It was definitely on the other side of the fence but we never got closer than 1 ft away before the numbers started going up again. Was the Airtag in the Twilight Zone. It was then (though not very quickly) that Catie realised that the directional facility worked in three dimensions and that as we were holding the phone a foot or so above the ground we'd need to get right down to ground level. Even then with the direction at zero feet away, we couldn't see the tag in the undergrowth. Things were kicked around until finally Ernie spotted it. It was a team effort though that only I was not a part of, so everyone else picked up some sweets at the Post Office on the way home.
We'd worked together (apart from me) and found the missing item and it really was the greatest day of my life. Even though the item is largely unused. It's still very expensive, so it's actually probably more costly to lose the airtag than the dog (or indeed a child). So good to have it back.
And it'd been a little treasure hunt for the family and us working in unison (apart from me, but it was my phone). It's almost worth engineering this every weekend.
